I agree. This seems a risky way to deal with a hardware defect. My first macbook had RSS, and apple exchanged it for a new one with me. If this one started doing it I'd be very worried - firmware update or no.
Yup. The way to properly handle the problem is to replace the MoBo's. I don't want to start a "this update will make your laptop overheat" rumor, but I'm pretty certain that they are trying to bypass the root defect.

I think something that's hugely undersold recently is the extra security. Macs provide better security (no matter how you slice it) and with less nagging. This may not be a big deal to tech-savvy people who know how to protect themselves, but my mom getting a virus on her computer ranks up there with being audited by the IRS.
That kind of stress on a normal user will make them switch and never look back.
Sad part is, as adoption increases...so will viruses/malware/trojans/etc.
Best analogy Ive heard is:
Windows 7 is a house with bars on the windows, and industrial locks on the doors...in Baltimore.
OSX is a house with no locks, in the middle of nowhere.

Really? I have Windows 7 on desktop and find it to be the same crap as Vista but with a new theme pack. Other than the slightly different appearance it seams essentially exactly the same (ie the worst Windows since M.E.).
You may have Windows 7 on your desktop but I doubt if you've ever used it properly. Now I've been a Mac user for a long time and I own an iMac and an MBP but let me tell you this, Windows 7 is definitely much better than Vista.
I really don't want to compare Windows to OSX but after using both Vista and 7, I am very confident when I say that Microsoft has really done a good job with Windows 7. Vista was a disaster though....

LOL! That's precisely why the "limited supply" iPad2 launch was such a fiasco. You impulse buyers couldn't pull the trigger. Seriously... were this any other company other than Apple at least top 3 execs would have had their asses thrown out the door.
Since the same exact thing happened with the XBox 360, PS3, and Wii - I must've missed the news stories that announced the firing of Microsoft's, Sony's, and Nintendo's top executives.
Could you provide a link to those news items please? Thanks!

That's a very old render. I doubt MacAllen made it. Plus, why would you want a transparent display on a desktop? I can almost understand it on a window, but on a desktop it just looks like ****.
In addition, the keyboard curves in the wrong direction. It would be mucho painful to use.

I don't recall massive outcry from the devs on those other platforms. Why do you think that is?
For Nintendo back in the 80's, there was massive outcry. Not only did they gatekeep but they had a high licensing fee and capped the number of releases per year per developer. So yeah, devs were pissed. Atari even lied to the patent office just so they could reverse engineer the lockout chip (and got sued for it).
So if you don't recall, you probably weren't paying attention

Apple needs to do something fast, beause virtually forcing schools across America to take on Macs and whining that Microsoft are big bullies isn't going to help them.
Sorry, i'm being a bit extreme, but i wish Apple would hurry up and do something.
PCs are the competition and releasing an update of a product every six months, while the competition is constantly updating, isn't going to work for them for much longer.
I am shocked to hear you say that "Apples exists to compete with PCs and one of, if not THE major element of that is having the best/fastest hardware!" Apple exists to make money, and part of that means competing with pcs. But again, the motivation is the need to make money, not to compete with pcs for the sake of competing with pcs. Not all users want more power, ease of use is more important than some. I merely suggested that this is a complex problem that requires serious marketing, not simple, uni-variable analysis (eg. faster= more market share). WHere do you consider all the factors of buying a computer? This is why you can never say which computer is "best" At work my pc is tons better than a mac, because I can run ProEngineer (a solid modeling program). At home, my mac is best, because of imovie, itunes, the os, and .mac, etc

Reading the reactions to iPod in 2001 were hilarious. It shows how far we've come in our trust of Apple, I'm not speaking as an expert. Now it seems like if Steve Jobs breathes we'll buy it. I am sad to see the iPod go I have 120gb and may have to upgrade before they go. I use every kb of mine.

I will leave your personally offensive remarks aside, suggesting instead that you get a transvestite, oops, Dell PC, dude. I am sure you can find a better desktop in their highly confusing webshop. As for Gisele Buendchen, she stays on our side, thanks a lot...
Just calling a spade a spade, Mr Lawyer. You made a comment that was a lie. The iMac is NOT the "most powerful desktop in the world". Not by a long shot.
If you don't want people to say you're full of crap then don't talk crap. Simple as.
Where else would you sit your iMac?
You know what I mean! :p
What do people buy if they want desktop performance? Apple currently offer NOTHING with desktop performance, it's either mobile or workstation.

Wow. Where did you find this schmatic?Usually it is in the Developer Notes ... we usually look at these to see what Apple is really doing with machines.
Mac Pro Developer Note (http://developer.apple.com/documentation/HardwareDrivers/Conceptual/Mac_Pro_0608/index.html)
Then the are the usual DIY pictures of the machine at...
Mac Pro Support link (http://www.apple.com/support/macpro/)
Until the picture showing the "unpopulated" SATA connector was actually "unused" we were wondering about the 6 SATA ports. But yes, the 2 extra SATA ports mean a lot more options than people first thought.

I am professional editor. I get paid to edit. I just dont edit giant films. I think there is a little discrediting going on for what makes a professional editor.
I was in a discussion a year ago about all the new features that just got released. In the days of yesteryear, editor (film wise) would cut the film, then once they had a locked picture, they would add audio, color the film, sound effects and score.
However, a year ago during a project I found myself very angry at the way FCP was functioning given the way editors have to edit today. I have been a big FCP user for years and consider myself very experience on the software. I refer to the editing style of today, which is also being done in feature film editorial, that you are no longer just the film/video editor. YOU ARE the sound designer, the colorist, the composer, and the technician, at least at a basic level.
I feel that 10 years ago you would show a "rough" cut that was 50% done, no audio effects, color, or score, just the cuts and clients were possible able to get it. However today I feel that a rough cut needs to look more like 95% done. Many times when I show a client a piece of footage that doesnt look like an almost finished product, they get concerned on the final piece, even when you explain that is a rough cut.
So now that a lot of editor are having to show cuts that are almost done to get notes, the actual act of editing has become a nightmare to me. I have to move sounds, scores, titles, overlays, graphics all out of the way to make the simplest edit. Half the time, something gets moved that isnt supposed to. causing extra work. And I will be honest, sometimes, (which I know we all do....) I say good enough, because the actual act of moving a giant timeline around is just too painful.
well not anymore (hopefully)
I want the freedom that this FCPX with hopefully provide. It seems to be changing with how many of us are going to have to start editing.
And of course one final thought. A good editor is a good editor, it is an art. Just because someone is an "expert" on AVID, PP, FCP doesnt mean they are an good editor. Same as someone who knows how to put paint on canvas isnt necessarily Van Gogh.
I think this version will help us tell stories easier and more efficient. It is still up to the editor what he/she will do with the tool.
Nicely put.

I can see many benefits to develop from this. Maybe not on an iMac, but a larger iPad with iMac or Mac Pro power from a designing stand point.
Yes, keep the use of a mouse and/or keyboard for the comfort side of things. But when it comes to intricate design, a mouse is just a pain to use. A Wacom tablet has been around a while and some still use it, but you're pretty much drawing blind folded. If you could use a type of stylus or a finger and draw/edit directly on the screen that would make detail work sooooo much easier and faster.
I think this is a good direction. Who says the iMac will still be a desktop monitor/computer? It could be like the iPad maybe with a popout easel for use as a freestanding monitor (maybe not as cheesy as that, but you get the picture), while still keeping your "all in one" desktop component.
I wonder if part of the problem is that the price of a touch screen that is sensitive enough for drawing application is to high a price and not needed in mass market device.
I kind of wonder if there could be an accessory Stylus that has it's own tracking system so that plays off the touch screen sensor to establish start end end location but feeds the system far more detailed drawing information from it's own measurements including maybe till and pressure.
That way only applications that need the extra function have to pay for it.
