So The law doesn't really apply when there's public image at stake? LOL
The law doesn't enter into this. Well, it does now, because Apple filed their complaint. But please understand this: I'm not disputing that acquiring the phone was probably a felony and Apple is within their rights to ask the police to investigate. But having a right to do something does not mean that it is always the best strategy to execute that right. It may be more intelligent in the long run to restrain yourself. Why? You said it yourself:
But because it's a "big" entity it's suddenly "bullying."
People are generally disposed to take the side of the underdog - in this case an underdog who managed to slip one through Apple's net of secrecy, which is seen by many as ludicrously excessive. (I know, it has its purpose in throwing copycats back a couple of weeks - but public perception is what counts here.)
Whether it's fair or not, a big powerful company harassing a small likable scoundrel of a blogger (even though it may be perfectly legal here) is perceived as "bullying". And being seen as a bully is bad for business.
As for the deterrent effect in comparable future situations: There is none. Chen obviously never expected any of this backlash because he could have covered his ass so easily - mainly by not buying the phone but the story (which may actually still be a viable defense) thus avoiding the felony and just reporting on the fact that the phone was "lost and then found by an undisclosed source - here are some pictures - some people speculate that it actually is a real iPhone prototype but we were unable to verify that. The honest finder handed it in to the police. Oh look, the person claiming it is in fact an Apple employee. How intriguing."

Well, it looks like google won the smartphone battles. I kinda thought it would happen, just nowhere near this fast.

We'll have to see if they can spin android success into tablet success, too. I wouldn't be surprised.

The day the iPhone was introduced, the Smartphone Market became an iPhone-alike Market, and to produce an iPhone-alike phone, you need access to Apple's patents. That's what Nokia is after, or else it's dead. Making-out with Microsoft doesn't give Nokia everything it needs, and leaves it open to litigation: they say that attack is the best form of defence, so Nokia is just doing what it thinks it needs to do to survive.

I have relatives living in various 3rd-world countries, and even the less-well-off wouldn't buy a 3GS, but they are willing to pay top dollar (or the local eq) for the iPhone4.

Tanker-loads of Nokia faithful are dumping their Nokia phones for iPhones and Blackberrys -- even Android has a long fight ahead of it in these (non-geek/techy) markets.

Any credibility you had went out the window when you blatantly revealed your bias in the first sentence.

That's not how steam works. When you purchase something through steam, you can download and install it as many times as you want. If your computer crashes, all you have to do is reinstall steam log into your account and redownload it. This is one of the reasons why steam is so popular.

as far as the price. $50 for games is standard, especially for pc ( and I guess now mac ). It costs millions of dollars to make and promote a game. Most games for consoles are $60 and there PC counterpart are $50 because both microsoft and sony take $10 off each sale. If you are concerned with the length of the game, go read a few reviews and they will all tell you the game is much much longer then the original, plus it includes a co-op mode with different levels. $50 seems pretty good to me.

Also, it's supply/demand. Millions of people are going to go out and spend $50 on the game, so why not sell it at $50? The nice thing about steam is, if you can find it cheaper elsewhere, you can still install it on your PC/Mac and play it through steam. But a lot of people are willing to pay the $5 extra to get the convenience of not needing to ship or wait in a line to buy the game.

the streaming distribution of the game is much cheaper then phyiscal copy distribution. I just saying they can add an incentive to make people download it, and they make more MONEY. Which is a given they are making alot more per digital copy sold compared to phyiscal copy sold. There is sizible production cost with making phyiscal copy, distributing to retailers, and then giving cut to retailer who selling it. Especially as the title gets older and retailer take more on each sale.

Currently, I noted that it is cheaper to buy physical copy then it is to buy digital copy. That shouldn't be the case. And I believe eventually wont be the case in future for software. I not debating that there are costs involved with making these games, I am debating what the streaming model should look like. It show be cheaper.:o

I disagree. I like how its seperate. What could you possibly need to sync between Mail and iCal anyways..... Event invties... ohh wait that works. I believe its better to have 3 seperate programs instead of entourage... that way you can be more efficient with your use. Like for instance, when I use my laptop in class I close Mail... cause I don't have Internet, but I still need iCal. So its perfect. I mean the only downside is that you have to click to open two apps. I don't see anything else. WHat can you integrate between the two other than contacts which is its own program.

I think its perfect how it is. I would love to see new features, new features are always great; I just can't think of any. Ohh I know one. Making things in iCal have links to documents so if a To-Do is to like finish a project.. u can link to the files so its all there, due date, importance, notes, location of files. And maybe they could work on the calendars (categories). Smart calendars would be nice. And more flexibility with calendars. I don't really see any other problems. I'm sure there are I'm just not that good at looking.

three independent apps are good if you are a single user. if you work in a corporate enviroment and people send you meeting invitations all the time. it's good to get them in your calender automatically, confirm that you go there requires mail anyway. check for schedule conflicts, mail attendee lists to participants, check somebody elses free time right from the mail program and so on. MS outlook is great for that. my guess is that you don't work in a business enviroment like that?

hoping they upgrade the rest of the suite. I've got Studio 2 since I got it with an EDU discount and couldn't upgrade it, but I love having it in the same program set from start to finish; everything from Motion to FCP to color to DVD Studio Pro and compressor. I use it all as part of my workflow. it would suck to upgrade only one component and leave the rest sitting dusty on the shelf.

Everything I have read about the NAB event was that it was strictly about FCP and nothing else. Just because the dont talk about the rest of the suite doesnt mean anything one way or the other. Apple specifically said to Jim Dalrimple of the Loop insight that they were focusing on FCP in this event. Just focusing on one product at a specific event isnt meant to imply anything about other products that they dont talk about. It was a sneak peek even from Apples perspective and not even a formal announcement like what Apple would talk about at their WWDC keynote or the annual iPod/iPhone announcements.

The Japanese have a very high social contract. They live and work in tight quarters so they follow the rules as to not offend anyone. It's part of their culture. I don't see the connection with this and healthcare.

    Sigh,
Can we get some MAC rumors this is absolutely ridiculous, the mac mini and iMac are over due for updates and you still prune the web for the smallest hint about a product that has just been re-released.

I realize your trying to generate traffic but this is getting increasingly low.

The front page is filled with iOS information and a little on FCP and the new Adobe suite.

Where are the MAC rumors.

I truly agree. I especially hate all the rumors concerning the iPad 3, whatever that is...

Let's hear about the iMac and Mac mini now, please.

I doubt there will be a silver bullet feature that will blow away vista, but overall improvements will take OS X to the next level.

but what is there to get excited about? spotlight (which is rarely used) is faster...wooo... running windows easier...great, not really an upgrade to the mac os, though...

i'm going to assume we're gonna get these things, but there will almost certainly be some big features that we haven't thought of yet.

A 1.66GHz Core 2 Duo costs roughly the same as a Core Solo per 1,000 sold ($209 + Apple's discount). With the graphics chip costing Apple pennies, they can go quite aggressive on the processor.

Wow, if this is indeed live that's great! I haven't seen a live broadcasted presentation from Jobs in quite a while, probably since the last WWDC or MWSF which was done live a couple years ago.

I thought Jobs wasn't going to do the presentation today?

There is a new method of producing carbon fiber called "chopped carbon fiber." It might make sense for Apple to use something like this as opposed to woven carbon fiber, which is very expensive to manufacture.

Before the update my MBP would beachball everytime it tried to wake up from sleep forcing a hard restart. It's been three days since installing and I am prepared to say the the update has fixed the problem. :)

Although my experience has been positive, the track record of this update does not seem too good. I personally have not noticed any increase in temp. Processor whine was always there and can still be silenced with Quiet MBP.

Kinda sucks they took away the 512 model, scrolling through 200+ songs doesn't sound like it would be fun. I get annoyed with my 512 sometimes(though I absolutely love it deerly) scrolling.

You could always just put fewer songs on it. Plus, the shuffle isn't really designed for finding specific songs.

I love my black iPhone and will be sticking with it, but can admit the white one looks nice.... Some people are just coming off as bitter that the new shiny device is getting so much attention and making theirs look outdated, even though its the same exact phone with a different color.

so op your from ameria right? here were i live in the uk bisiness have generally leased lines that is dedicated symetric bandwith for them only and its garenteed. here the general costs are for dedicated 10 meg down 10 meg up about 400 a month over copper pairs, or depending where you are about 600 for 100mb down 100mb up dedicated over fiber. id figure out the difference betwwen a eqiv connection in america and your cost of your current curcuit and try budget that in too. 10 meg up 10 meg down will be plenty.

    Yes, S. California.

Colo is still cheaper, at least here.

For example, Hurricane Electric offers a FULL CABINET (42U) in San Francisco with 100mbps uplink speed for $600 month.

Ubiquity offers 4U at $125/month, 1/4 cabinet at $475/month both with 100mbit/sec uplink in Los Angeles. 1/2 cabinet at $850/month (about the same as the amount quoted above for a leased line alone) but with 1000 mbit/sec uplink). I don't imagine the OP would need more than 1/4 cabinet (10U), and could probably fit this into 4U.

Note "bandwidth" quota is much lower (1mbit/sec for the 4U, 5mbit/sec for the 1/4 cabinet) than the uplink speed. You can burst to 100 or 1000, but, of course, if you sustained that rate constantly, you'd be nicked for the extra bandwidth. (It's actually rather more complicated than that.) In the case of the OP, it doesn't seem likely he'd exceed the base charge. Look up "95'th percentile billing", which is standard, at least here in the U.S.

For the OP, the existing connection seems to make sense, since he already has the leased line, presumably to support in-house user's Internet access.

However, for others that might have a server need that would not be easily met by their existing leased line, (or might violate terms of service) colo might make much more sense.

The reason it is so much cheaper is because it takes the leased line completely out of the equation. There's just an Ethernet cable to another room. The expensive "last mile" is eliminated.

I've quoted some U.S. prices, but I'd assume the economies are similar in Europe. Delivering bandwidth to your business costs a lot more than delivering bandwidth to a data center.
