I wouldn't go near these machines if I was in the market for a portable...
Well my MB was bought the day they were announced - my local Apple store didn't have them on display yet :) and mine hasn't had the shutdown issue.

I thought this pic Engadget posted is pretty funny:

    I agree and disagree.
agree that the mono mixes are better. but leave the stereo ones alone. they can remaster them if they want... but I dont think the actual mixes should be messed with. I certainly dont trust Sir Paul to be sitting in front of the mixing console saying to George martin "hey, can we turn up the sap?" if all the beatles were alive, maybe. but I'd rather them release the albums with both Stereo and mono mixes on them. like Beach boys did with Pet sounds (and its still only 12.99)

Sounds like a plan. Agreed, Paul shouldn't be left alone at the console! The result is: Let it Be...Naked.

But remastering is critical. As is easy access to what was originally intended: mono.

Maybe the Beatles should have worn meat suits to please today's generation of ignorant , uneducated followers who like celebrities just for being famous.

The Beatles did the meat thing in 1966. ;)

    There is a 256MB option.

Amazing, how many half-wits are out there!

There is a larger issue in Hewitt's statement, which seems to totally go over some people's heads.

And to the "Facebook sucks" crowd: may be so, but there are a lot more Facebook users, than iPhone users. So it's still important.

And really, over the last few years, my otherwise beloved Apple has turned into the George W. Bush of PC companies. Look at their newly found moral stance, regarding applications. Or their strong-arm tactics. Or the picking of wars not likely to be in their own interest - like the ones with Google, and Adobe.

Or, the fact, that the truly religious (and uninformed), blindly follow, no matter where.

dam, could you imagine how many happy people their would be on this forum if apple released new mac pros and macbook pros the same day... i think the servers would crash. and the last purchased thread would be over loaded with new mac goodies :p

And if it all happened on the same day as iPad pre-orders.... :o

My MacBook was purchased in the first month. I did not have any random shutdown problems until the first SMC update.

Then I started getting random shut downs. All the %#(*&$#*($&^& time.

I took mine to Apple Store in MN, Southdale, and they fixed the heat sink within 90 minutes. No more random shutdowns.

The Genesis Bar dude went to console and looked for 2 items. They showed up. They took the MacBook. Fixed it and called me in 90 minutes.

My MacBook runs at 63c on a regular basis. I do have 2G ram and run 18 to 21 programs at once. I also have a cool pad beneath the kind with a fan beneath my MacBook that runs all the time.

    Whoz gonna "BUY" Vista....??
I am definitely not shelling out $250 odd dollars for WINDOWS VISTA!

Don't forget the additional $1000 that you will have to shell out for hardware that is capable of running Windoze Vista.

I'm not sure many would agree with you on that. Apple has always been a hardware company. Just because their software drives their hardware doesn't mean they are software focused. If they were primarily a software company, they would have gone the way of Microsoft and put out MacOS to run on any generic PC box. But we all know their take on that. Just to drive my point home, when was the last time Apple released a piece of software that people went nuts about and stood in lines for hours to get?

They've said themselves that they are primarily a software company. Just ask Steve.

Do you think anyone would be camping out for the latest iToy if it came without an OS out of the box?

Those who design websites with Flash are just lazy and poor web designers. Fortunately, those sites are becoming more and more rare.

It's video (YouTube, et al) that Flash has a stranglehold on.

I want HTML5 video to become standardized too, but the problem is, on what? QuickTime? Windows Media? It could very well end up much worse than Flash.

I believe Costco showed Apple the door.

This is also what I took from it.

It also happens to make more sense than apple showing them the door.

They probably were unable to secure the kind of discounted prices WITH acceptable profit margins to justify the retail space.

I'd like to point out the reason it is being released at WWDC. It has a form of widgets and internet connectivity options. It will be a whole new platform for developers to release apps. I was told this 6 months ago, by somebody who has always given me Apple rumors correctly.

3P apps and games? I'm all for it but it would blur the simplicity of the ipod and effectively make it a PDA, i'm not sure Apple/iPod/iTunes is ready to take this step.

    Why not 4GB of RAM?
The system uses some of the 4 GiB of physical address space to map I/O busses and devices.

For example, that 256 MiB of VRAM on the graphics card appears in the physical address space -- which means that only 3.75 GiB is available for real memory. PCIe busses take more, as well as network and other needs. PCI Express reserves a lot of memory for I/O space.

A with a 32-bit chipset the OS has to "ignore" any real memory that's usurped by I/O space reserved addressing. A 64-bit chipset (with a 64-bit OS) doesn't have that problem.

I have a 4 GiB Dell D620, but Windows and Linux only see about 3.1 GiB of that due to the I/O space issues. I expect that OSX86 has the same restrictions - since it's a hardware issue.

IBM only offers 3 GiB configs of the same Yonah/Napa combination - apparently to avoid "where's the rest of my memory" complaints. It looks like Apple is copying IBM's approach.
    _____________________

The ProMac has a 64-bit capable chipset, so the memory extensions that were used for the PowerMac G5 can be used to avoid this issue.

The Napa chipset is 32-bit - Santa Rosa will be 64-bit.
