"Album Artist" tag is supposed to be for albums that have songs that are 'performed' by multiple artists, not for albums that have songs from different artists.
Yup, so for example you might have a track, "South Side" by Moby (featuring Gwen Stefani) and assign Album Artist as "Moby". It'll get files under Moby if you view the Album Artist tag, but it'll still find it if you search for Gwen Stefani.

Another example is that I have "The Best of Geroge Harrison", where half the tracks are by "The Beatles", I'd like the Album Artist to be "George Harrison", but have the individual tracks also tagges as Beatles tracks.

It is useful, but it's definitely not intended for "multiples" in the way you want it. (Me too).

If Apple is selling tons of products, in a market with plenty of competitors, how can they be not competitive? 9.3% of buyers in the USA decided that for their money, a Mac is the best computer they can find.

    They're not competitively priced. I wouldn't argue that they're not a competitive brand (HW,SW, marketing...appeal factor)...of course they are :)

My $129 dollar investment in Leopard is going to look like even more of a steal ... :D

Considering that Windows XP was released in Windows Vista correpsonds to Jaguar+Panther+Tiger, which is 3*129=387, which is much closer to the price of Windows Vista ;-)

EDIT: And btw., as some other users noted, the $129 for Mac OS X is the price for an update..

...they had to bring the store down worldwide?
Sometimes I wonder what Apple hires those smart people for, if it's just the morons running their daily business.

Because those morons have to clear caches worldwide so that all the Akamai pages/sites are updated in sync.

    'fixed' for me.

ironically the DAY they released the update.my macbook started shutting down intermittingly..

instaleld it..works fine so far.as for the fans..they still go 'nuts' when i run a few videos on youtube..is THAT normal?

like they get pretty loud ugh

The loud fan ISN'T normal, and it's something I've been fighting about with Apple ever since I bought this POS machine a day after they were released. I'm on my second one now (the first one was replaced because it was broken right out of the box), and this one sounds like a jet airplane getting ready for take off, with the turbines winding up and down.

What particularly makes me upset is that we've got two MacBooks in my family, mine and my wife's, and hers is completely silent. When the fan does kick in on her machine, it makes a nice "whoosh" sound of air being pushed, and nothing else. Mine make this whiney noise coming from the fan itself, so loud you can't even heard the "whoosh" of air being moved.

My MacBook has already been in AppleCare once for a fan replacement, as well as the heat-sink replacement. I had hoped this new firmware would slow the darned fan down, but nope--it's still buzzing away like an electric razor.

I've owned five Apple laptops prior to this one (dating back to a PowerBook 520), and this MacBook is by far the worst one of the bunch. Worse even than my "flaming" PowerBook 5300 (which still works and doesn't make a peep).

I was really thinking about an iMac, but I'm considering a Sony Vaio laptop with an IPS monitor from a 3rd party. I'll definitely wait to see what Apple comes out with this week, though.

Whenever anyone posts on here that they're thinking of going Windows, a lot of people either shout TROLL! or say: fine, goodbye.

I still feel like it's a shame to leave Macs behind. Still, again I have to say that Windows 7 offers a lot more to the Mac-learned creative community than any other version from Microsoft.**

**Other than maybe Windows 2000 pro in its heyday... nice solid system that got out of your way.

Then why are you not buying the iMac?

I saw the Zune bus today in Oregon. A very well maintained but older model bus with a dark brown wrap with the Zune logo.

Says it all right there. Zune is a recycled product from Toshiba, advertised on refurbished old bus.

Apple will never make a laptop that is that size because it would mean that they would have to take out the optical drive and make the computer ultimately worthless without a docking station. Apple will never make a computer that isn't fully capable from the start.

I agree with you that a 2 lb. laptop isn't possible with an optical drive, but a 3 lb. laptop is still possible:

    (see the Fujitsu LifeBook)
    http://www.pcconnection.com/ProductDetail?sku=6170351&srccode=cii_5784816&cpncode=10-28291577-2

I really think this is a possibility. And it would play to one of Apple's core strengths of late, which is making the most compact product in their category. Think of the entire iPod line, the Mac mini, The MacBook Pros (thinnest laptops at their size, or at least the 17" is).

I really think this will happen within the next year. Maybe Summer 2007 after Santa Rosa comes out. It would be a great back-to-school product...

I can't agree with Jobs on this one.

In this era of WTDs (wax-tramsitted diseases), there will be no sharing of my earbuds!

But if the person has a player, Zune or anything, then they also have their OWN earphones :)

It seems that since Wal-Mart tends to service the very lowest income class in our culture and many of these folks tend to not have computers, and to the extent they do, tend to not have broadband either, it seems there is a degree of mutual exclusivity of markets.

Therefore it seems Wal-Mart is less concerned about the sales themselves as the "benefits" they receive by the physical customer traffic they get from some people going to Wal-Mart to buy intentionally underpriced product so they will shop for other things while there.

I think there may be a flaw in your reasoning. If wal-mart tended to service the very lowest income class, then how does this class propel such a company to become the biggest retailer of just about any consumable good in this country? Wal-mart targets anyone with a buck to spend and will try to sell them anything to help them part with that dollar, be that an iPod shuffle, DVD or box of peanuts.

As for the foot traffic, I doubt that online music sales has any effect on it. If so, how is Walmart still growing?

    edited for grammer

If the black thing in the picture is the Intel Core Duo 2 and previous reports say that the new PowerMacs will be using a Xeon processor then Apple would have to announce something else, maybe Core Duo 2 MacBook Pros or iMacs. But that is only if the previous reports are true.....

Look... All I know is, if a HUGE, INTERNATIONAL company like Apple can pull off their website without it which gets millions and millions of hits every day and is very well designed and media rich, there is no excuse!

Apple's website was thick with Flash and frames when the iPhone was first announced. It was the "real internet".

Steve Jobs deliberately stayed away from displaying the Apple website on an iPhone for months... because Safari couldn't display it correctly, if at all.

At the time, I noted online what he was doing, and commented that Apple was going to have to totally redesign their website before the iPhone went on sale.

    And so they did.

"Move on"? :( Seems kind of testy.
Not testy, just telling you my way of dealing with d-bags.
My point being, playing with randoms is inevitable, and a necessity. After all, if one didn't play with randoms, how would one meet 'nice players' to add to your friend's list?
Sure, playing with randoms is going to happen. But my point is, if you play 5 games of Team Slayer, the chance that all 35 of the randoms you would play against are jerks is minimal, at best. In 5-10 games, you could find yourself 15-20 good, polite players to add to your friends list, and never have to deal with it again.
I imagine it isn't hard to do, but Live seems to be made to play with players from all over. Playing games with only friends, seems to be rather counter productive.
My friends list isn't filled with only people I know in real life. I have friends from all over, that I've met playing all kinds of games, and meet more all the time when my friends bring in some of their friends to play. I'm not suggesting you build up a wall, and close the community out, just to make sure the d-bags don't get to you. I'm just saying, the tools are available, and if you use them properly, your experience will be much better.

Playing with friends not only rids you of having to play with crappy randoms, but it also adds more fun to it as well. If you play with people you know, the communication is better, the team play is better, and often times you'll win more. To me, that seems like the ultimate objective. Have fun and win. I accomplish that by playing primarily with friends. You're free to do whatever you want.
The issue being that Halo proportionately seems to have a greatest number of jerks playing, as compared to say other games. The shame is that even Bungie realized the crappier part of their community, and made such settings as hearing only your team, or even an option to mute all other players.
As I mentioned earlier, when you have one of the largest online communities, you will, by nature of the Law of Averages, have a large number of jerks. No game is immune to this. Forza, COD, Warhawk, Uncharted 2, Burnout, etc. I can't think of a single game that I've played online in which I haven't run into online d-bags. It is just the way the online community works (see PA comic below ;)). MacRumors is a nice, big online community, based around a simple consumer electronics company. That doesn't mean there aren't jerks abound in here. Instead of saying it's a "shame" that Bungie gives those options, you should be happy they do, use them, and then start wondering why more games don't.

Finally, Jobs was asked if he was worried about Microsoft's upcoming media player (Zune) and its "community" features:

In a word, no. I've seen the demonstrations on the Internet about how you can find another person using a Zune and give them a song they can play three times. It takes forever. By the time you've gone through all that, the girl's got up and left! You're much better off to take one of your earbuds out and put it in her ear. Then you're connected with about two feet of headphone cable.
    Classic! :D

With the iPod, you only need one to share music via the earbuds (or dual jack and second set of earbuds).

With the Zune, the other person must have one too in order to take advantage of the wireless sharing feature.

I don't see it being all that popular.

I don't think Wal-Mart makes money on a lot of their DVDs. They sell them at a loss to get people in their stores. If people buy on iTunes, they don't come into Wal-Mart.
Are you serious? Wal-Mart doesn't put a single thing in their store if it doesn't make them money. With Wal-Mart selling 40% of ALL DVD sales, they are making a nice revenue.

The only thing that they may start doing that doesn't make them much is their new generic drug program, where they are selling over 300 generic drugs at a much deeper discount then leading competitors. Wal-Mart isn't required to report earnings in this field, so who knows how it will go. I'm assuming well.

And yet, no new iPhone will be present ... I predict a lot of attending hearts will be broken!

If your paying $1600 just to see the new iPhone unveiled you are going for the wrong reason.

The fact that there may not be a new iPhone announcement must mean that their software announcements will be even bigger. Which is good for developers. It is a developer convention after all...

The new iPhone will come eventually. It was nice having it launch in the summer to help boost the summer month slump, as the highest sales are typically in winter then fade out slowly through the year, with bumps happening at new product launches. So moving the iPhone launch to later will make its effect quite different I think.

I'm not really fussed about touchscreen imacs but it does all add up. The magic pad for all the Macs without the touch-screen.. Ability to run iOS much like you currently run Dashboard, but much, much cooler..

From a gaming perspective it'd add a hell of a lot of value to the Mac platform.. Various other little apps would be cute additions too.

If they do it well it could offer big added value, and wouldn't signify anything in terms of "the end of the Mac platform" How many people aren't going to get iPhones but DO have Macs? Quite a lot.. How much iTunes store iOS software could Apple sell to those people? Quite a lot, I'd imagine! I'd certainly not mind the chance to play around with iphone software across the desktop too.

I would be very surprised if this sort of thing happens so soon though.

The delays were actually a good thing for me. Gave me time to "cool off" and realize that my iPad 1 is working just fine for me, and I can get along without upgrading to this generation.

LOL! That's precisely why the "limited supply" iPad2 launch was such a fiasco. You impulse buyers couldn't pull the trigger. Seriously... were this any other company other than Apple at least top 3 execs would have had their asses thrown out the door.

As an aside... my local Wal-Mart has had iPad2's for 2 weeks now. I've been there at least 3 times a week and they're always in stock.

I agree that this would be cool, but what would make it even better is enhanced iSync or other capability for third parties to take advantage and make content available. I suppose the iTMS could handle it, but the user should be able to load whatever he or she wants on it, I would think.

well as long as it can be imported into iTunes then its all good.

BTW - The people saying he did a second rate job or is a crappy developer, obviously are not familiar with iPhone development or the code that he created. The Three20 project was very good. I understand his frustration and am not surprised by his decision.
