It might not work at all but it would still look damn cool.

I saw the thread title and thought, "You could trade it in for a new MBP." :p
Seriously, I think the only real user-serviceable upgrades are the RAM and HDD. Beyond that, you'd be doing some soldering, I think.

PS: check out the mac processor power/ speed/ core #'s, buss speeds, RAM speed and Amt, when cs3,4, AP, & LR were introduced. It will put what you think will work in perspective with what will work just fine. The base 27 will suffice for years into the future. Add a matte screen when you get more serious. When you evolve the point when you are editing batch photos, or doing multiple poster sized layouts, add a few SSD's. When that time comes, their sizes & prices will be more in tune with reality.

I second those who like to partition....very useful for test files, OS 9, obviously Panther beta ( but only if you are a developer mind... ) ......and booting into if your main partion fails....good luck

I perused it a bit, and the screen shots did throw me in for a bit of a loop. I wasn't sure what to look out for. Perhaps Spotlight-like dimming only the relevant information and the removal of extraneous items like signatures, could help make it easier for someone to digest.
The screen shots could be saved as .GIFs instead of JPEGs for more space savings. What's the Wiki etiquette on other users updating an original Guider's screenshots?
I'm a newb at this, but something like this might be helpful. (#2.)

Have you considered buying a DS? I'm not being a zealot here, but the DS has lots of great games. I played through most of Phoenix Write on my last trip. Currently I'm playing Magical Starsign, and will be playing FF3 next.
It's OK to own both portables. I will later this year. They are both small enough to share the same carry on bag. :)

To go along with what others have posted...
You should definitely try to upgrade to either 10.3 or 10.4.
You'll find OS 10.1.x _very_ limiting, insofar as browsing is concerned, because the browsers and other software are too antiquated to handle much of what you'll encounter on the web today.
You should look for a 10.4 "universal" install DVD. Or, at the very least, OS 10.3.
Then, once you get the basic install completed, go to Apple's site and download the "combo" updater, which will get you to 10.4.11 (or to 10.3.9). Then use software update to apply whatever other updates are available.
IMPORTANT -- you _do_ have a drive in the older iMac that can read DVD's, is that correct?

I'm thinking about buying a ib or a pb for university. I'm not really happy about the ib cause it only has 14inch screen max. But the pb costs a lot! (especially since I live in canada). Is it worth the investment to buy a 15inch pb? I figured one with superdrive would cost 500$ more than a ib 14inch with superdrive. I wouldn't even think of buying a pc laptop because after I got my iPod, every machine with windows looks so damn ugly, but they do seem to have a better price.

If you've never used Cydia or TinyUmbrella to cache her iPad's SHSH files, having the 4.2.1 firmware on-hand will do you no good, as (I believe?) Apple has already stopped signing the 4.2.1 firmware.
If that's the case, you can only restore to 4.3.

I like to own my downloaded stuff like I would own a CD/DVD.
You own the physical CD/DVD/Blu-Ray, but you only license the content, whether from physical or now, digital media.
I really do hope this means more money going to the musicians and not the labels.

The only applications that might use this are military applications. Which are most likely classified applications. But in short, no, a normal application wouldn't use it. ;)
Just so you know there are no military applications that benefit from this.

Doubt screen size has anything to do with it - I'm running three displays off my Mini without any lag (2 at 1920x1080 aka 1080p and one at 1920x1200).
Do you have the Mac Mini plugged into a port labeled HDMI/DVI that is perhaps handled differently by the TV? I'm thinking image processing on the TV might be the cause of the lag, but I'm not 100% sure.
I don't have one yet, which is why I was asking...lol...glad to hear it works great though.

my answer is yes and no. I'll explain if this puzzles you.
Yes, I did make my Lion a major OS of use on my main machine.
No, I did not upgrade my Snow Leopard installation.
What I did was install it on a partition on a secondary drive in my tower, but I tend to use lion and the snow leopard partitions equally. I usually end up switching back and forth after a week or so of using each. both contain most of the same programs and bookmarks so I can easily do some work no matter which side i'm on, thankfully I haven't had too many issues with programs not working in lion. I did a clean install of lion DP1 and then wiped that and did a clean install of DP2 and have since just done the recommended updates. so yes, I did upgrade my main machine to lion, and no I don't use lion as my sole OS.

Preserve it in case you want to go back to 4.2.1 - the newest baseband isn't 100% compatible with older firmware. 4.2.1 is great as it doesn't have the "glitchiness" of 4.3.x

I was thinking of going to Eaton Centre, but reading after reading some tweets about the massive lineups, I decided to go to Yorkdale instead. I got there at 1:30 and there were about 300 people before me. At 6:30, I walked out with the iPad of my choice. Sweet!
