That $1199 iMac has lots of other wonderful features including a screen, but if you think it is anywhere close to the performance of a i7-2600 based PC (that go for $750 from HP/Dell) then you are delusional. To get something from Apple with an equivalent processor you are looking at a $2199 iMac or a $2499 Mac Pro. Doesn't matter that in the long term the Mac could be a better value, some people can't justify that huge price difference or paying additional for features they don't need or want or cannot afford to.

Again Macs are a premium product and because of that Apple will hit a ceiling of those who can afford or justify buying their products.

i7 based AIO for 750 from Dell? Oh wait, tell me you didn't just compare a Tower to an All in One computer.

Seriously. Why the hell do people do this? It's like comparing a truck to a roadster.

    Hi
Here's a question to ponder...How are people suppose to install this firmware if there macbooks keep shutting down?
Easy...With any firmware / SMC update, the sensors are ignored. This is the same thing with the Hardware Test CD as well. This is easily apparent because when the machine is updating the firmware, fans go to "deafening" mode.

Why is all of this? Ever since the elaborate cooling of the Power Mac G5 to keep things quiet, the cooling system has relied on a number of sensors throughout the casing, monitored by both a hardware thermal chip and the Mac OS X kernel. Take away Mac OS X and you are left with a dysfunctional cooling system...So, the hardware chip sets all fans to the highest speed in order to prevent overheating due to lack of information being supplied to it.

    One last thing...

My MacBook is an earlier unit and within the affected [serial number] range. I constantly push my MacBook to maximum temps for a number of hours continuously with DVD ripping / re-encoding and have not had one unexpected shutdown yet. So, please, let's not make this sound like some kind of plague...I now how most enjoy exaggerating these 'things'.

P.S. I read somewhere that it was the insulation of the sensor wire burning / melting off, therefore, causing a short. So, replacing the heatsink would also include a new sensor wire(s) that are constructed / routed better and not degrade with sustained high heat. The expanding heatsink sounds a little sketchy but possible...However, that'd be some impressive expansion as I'd guess Apple gives more more leeway than that between the heatsink and other components.

We all know Apple is the king of imaging technologies, they wouldn't release a product with something like a 3D screen without it being perfect and "magical".

No they're not! They use other peoples imaging technology. Generally with an exclusivity contract which is very anti competitive.

Yep, I'm one of them. Not to de-rail the thread, but I live about two blocks from a tiny tornado that popped down in the Birmingham area. No damage at my house, but three streets over there are no standing trees or power poles.

As for Tuscaloosa, jeez. I've never seen footage like this except for on Discovery Channel, in places like tornado alley. In the lower left hand corner you'll see my old law school, and behind it about a half-mile is the main Tuscaloosa hospital, DCH.

I'm so naive. I didn't think tornados like this were real, at least anywhere outside of known "tornado alley" kinds of places. Just awful.

    Tuscaloosa tornado video (http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/us/2011/04/28/nat.alabama.tornado.cnn?hpt=T1)

Glad you're okay. Aside from the horror of losing loved ones or injuries, I can't imagine having my home destroyed.

There's zero incentive for Apple to do that. They're in the business of making $$. If they made a phone, and supported it for 5 - 7 years, no one would buy new ones, therefore no revenue. It's all about making cash...

Plus, a phone going on 3 plus years is pretty good. You got you money's worth. Sell it on E Bay-or Craigslist, and make some cash. Or like you said, an iPod.

Yeah, but given they still sell the 3GS as a new phone, they should make a 3G version that is lighter on the processor so it's snappier or just provide the 3.X version.

I have been told a number of times that in reality wages do not make any significant different to actual product cost.

    It's simple to understand really.

If you have 1 guy who is standing, running a high tech machine that's turning out say 100 items per hour and those items are worth $20 each.

So that's $2000 per hour this unit (man and machine) are creating.

If you pay the guy $1 for this hour, or $20 for this hour. Yes, one it being paid 20 times as much as the other. But in reality, this cost it very little when put against the value of the items that are being created during this time period.

I'm also to the point of getting a MacBook for my next computer so I can bring it to work... I am SO much more efficient on my Mac than on my work PC. It's mostly due to expose, spotlight, and the dashboard.

I've already two computers on my desk at work, both of which are XP boxes, and I'd still rather bring my (as soon as C2D ships) MBP to work on that. Though I don't know if I'd actually want to hook it into the network at work. It's a pretty shady one.

Of course, not having had an macintel before, I have a question about parallels. How easy is it really to switch between the two systems? Is it a PITA or is it pretty easy? For me, it's easy to move from computer to computer to work with very little productivity lost. How much time does it take to switch between OS's when using Parallels?

    Thanks.

I would love a click-wheel iPod with the thickness of a iPod touch. Not that Apple would build such a thing. If true, I hope apple does not eave the click wheel concept in it's trash bin.

Well, you are already paying for color-screen, video-playback, photo-playback etc. etc. etc.. They seem to be adding features constantly, yet the price does not go up (more or less).Well, since I never liked, or considered buying, a "regular" iPod you're only half-right... colour-screen is just normal development, I guess, probably not much more expensive than monochrome ones, in large quantity... video and games are still not available on the nanos, and hopefully won't be for a long long while, so that is for the buyers of the "regulars" to pay... and photo was developed for the regular iPods, and even if I don't really need or want it, it probably was fairly cheap, too... :)

If you wanted a barebones iPod, you would always have the ShuffleI have my mini, and if I'm to replace that (and not just get a new battery when the time comes) it will probably be with one of the new nanos, which - even with the added photo-playback - is still fairy basic... ;)

In all honesty, he took the job knowing that he has to submit all his software he makes for facebook to Apple. I don't understand why he has to make a public comment whining about why he doesn't want to submit his software to a "middleman". Cool, next week I'm going to go whine to my boss saying I don't like him telling me what to do. I'm sure my boss, i.e. Apple, doesn't give a ****! It's a job!!!! If you want to be your own boss then do that, but don't whine about the role of employer/employee when you took the job!

So by that logic. You agree with the enforcement of a No Fly zone in Libya.

The "No Fly Zone" consists of far more than we are being told. Air strikes are being taken against Gaddafi's forces and arms (tanks being blown up).

From what I can tell, the world has entered a new phase of warfare. We choose who we want to win in a civil war (reasoning never shared with the public) or conflict of some type, then we use airpower to literally clear the way for that side to march on to power. This way we aren't in "traditional" warfare with troops on the group, but we sure as hell are doing more than just making sure Gaddafi's planes aren't in the air.

This is detached warfare, and I expect it to become the new paradigm. It's just abstract enough that the public won't view it as war costing us soldier's lives, regardless of whether military strikes are actually occurring. This will allow for the USA and/or the likeminded to continue its neverending military intervention around the globe while keeping the public detached enough to go with it, after all, "our troops will not be in harms way".

The next logical step I see in this is the replacement of our pilots with Avenger/Raptor Drones (next-gen version of the finished Predator program). Further abstraction, further detachment from the reality of warfare, this allows for governments to wage war while the public continues being disinterested as always. If "we" aren't getting hurt (aka soldiers dying) then the public rarely cares about what happens to "them" (whatever people we are attacking in a given conflict). Note how the casualties in world affairs are portrayed in American news, there could be 100 deaths as a result of a bombing somewhere, but the first thing to be reported is how many American casualties there were. Same goes for death toll reports in our ongoing wars.

This separation of the public's attention to the actual going ons in relation to warfare is truly scary stuff. We see only what we are allowed to see (war-related) from the mainstream media (see: John Pilger on imbedded journalism). We need future leaders to recognize these trends and stand against them before just accepting this stuff as part of the political machinery.
