Ive been doing similar research in to this,

TRIM is basically clearing a block of information properly, which your OS doesnt do, it just deletes it from your window and allocates the block to be written over. But when this happens on an ssd it means that it takes one cycle to delete the information properly, and one cycle to write what it wants in there.

Massively affecting the speed of the unit.

And all TRIM does is make sure the block is properly empty when it should be.

It is looking like Lion is going to have TRIM support anyway, just it 'may' only be for apple ssd's but there is always a work around, even now you can get a TRIM enabler on this forum.

Plus if its just gonna be a pure boot up drive like mine, and user folder is on mechanical drives, its not really gonna be rewriting anyway, just write once and then a whole load of reading. :)

And from what i can see the ssd is an amazing upgrade, you've only got to search youtube for "mac ssd bootup" and you'll see all sorts geeks showing off there new ssd speeds. lol.

    Anyway. hope that helps.

When I was little, I had a blind dislike for macs. I was occasionally forced to use OS 8.somthing at school, and my work on them was restricted to KidPrint. I clearly remember my dad commenting on buying a mac, and me yelling at him. My childhood was one of blind hatrid.
When I began highschool, I got really into creating videos. I got a bunch of footage for a skate video, and was introduced to iMovie, and my first real interaction with a mac. I made many videos after that, and eventually was hired as the head of my school district's video production studio. It was there where I had access to 3ccd cameras, and had the budget to order FCP and DVD studio pro to use there.
Eventually, I got sick of sitting in my studio for hours on end over weekends, and my campaign for a mac at home began. My only computer here was a Compaq Pesario (with the logo covered by and apple sticker) running Windows ME. I halfheardedly pushed for an iMac, but to little avail. It wasn't until my system had to be reformatted that my folks realized there was a problem. Mid October of this year came by, and the discovery of iTunes not working on ME was the straw that broke the camels back.
Using the "I'll need a laptop for college" speech, I got $1000 to spend at Apple store online for an early Christmas presant. Today I placed my order for a 15" Albook, Airport, FCE and BT mouse. The 3.5 years of horrable performance from a $900 computer are drawing to an end, with two weeks of an agonizing wait.

    Thanks!

Well, I have 8GB of RAM so is OS even an issue? My biggest concern is the fact I'll have it running the majority of the day and I pretty much have 0 experience with Parallels and how hard it will work my machine.

I am actually leaning towards Windows 7 now since I sometimes like to Boot Camp over to play some games and the Direct X support is nice. Just want to make sure I am making the right choice >.<

I think it's personal preference. With only 4GB of ram allocate 2GB. Once you upgrade to 8 then give it 4. If you can run it on 2GB then you don't have to run out and upgrade to 8GB.

Yes, I'd like to know about this too, so that I can have my boyfriend tape it for me while I'm at work! :D

That sounds too good to be true though...

I ran out of room on my 500GB External HD, I want a new one probably a 1TB. I shoot photography and have 58GB on my HD, is there a way to remove it from my macbook HD and just transfer it to my new external once I get it so I can gain 58GB for my macbook hard drive? Thanks!

What you want is a book on unix shell programming. The oreilly book "Learning the bash Shell" is decent.

When you run terminal you get a unix shell. Most likely the shell you're running in is called the bash shell. It might also be called sh, but the two are similar.

Open up a terminal and type the command:
    ps
The right column in the output will tell you what shell you're running. That's the subject you want to learn about.

Hello there. I understand that are a million resources out there to help people who have spilled something on a computer, but I haven't been able to find anything that relates exactly to my problem.

Anyway, since I'm a bit of an idiot, I managed to spill a really small amount of water, and I mean really small amount, on my late 2009 Macbook. I did the usual, power off, flipped upside down, leave to dry for a week trick, and the computer itself seems to be working fine now. When I plug in a USB keyboard.

Without it, however, it's being very odd. At the login screen, it looks as though I'm typing, but even keys such as enter and shift and showing the dots of hidden letters. When I try typing on any other document however, nothing comes up at all. Just sounds as though it's a bit broken with that, doesn't it?

Well, when I went on to play a game on it today, using the USB keyboard of course, I accidentally started pressing the WASD keys to move my character around. And it worked. But it still won't allow me to type elsewhere.

I truly have not got a clue what's wrong with this thing, but I'm worried that it's a serious problem with the computer. Could it be my logic board? I'd really appreciate some help cause this is killing me here, I can't afford to buy a new one to be honest, so I'm hoping there's a cheap fix to this.

Thank you very much if you read this.

First off there was some kind of odd dhcp issue with airport extreme prior firmware 7.5.2 wich could introduce this problem. update the firmware if it is @ the latest.

As I mentioned, it's not the router. A Belkin N+ did the same thing on this Pro. It's the MacBook for sure.

I think you are confused. You cannot turn the AEBS into a modem, because it is a router. A modem takes the incoming signal from your ISP and converts it into a format your computer can make sense out of. The AEBS does not have this capability, as it relies on the demodulated signal from the modem.

oh ok, so if i bout the new cisco 3000 then i can use it and sell my aebs! might have to go that route!

    thanks

It would be nice if Apple made something similar, dig a little deeper into the corporate computer room.

Maybe one day apple will look closer at the server market, but it doesn't look like anytime soon

After flawless operation since getting my iPad 2 on launch day I am now having some issues.

    1. Wi-Fi will randomly drop out.
    2. This causes the touch recognition to be unresponsive. Home button, power, volume buttons all fine.
    3. Occasionally the iPad will then act like it is possessed and will randomly perform touch related operations.
    4. This requires a reset, turning Wi-Fi Off and back on to recognize the network.
    5. A few times the Wi-Fi has "Grayed Out" and requires a rest of network settings to restore it.
    6. Also will cause the time on the iPad to become out of sync.

I have tried doing a restore with and without using a backup file. The wireless router apperas to be functioning fine and is used by a Laptop, two iPhones, and a DS with no issues at all. The iPad had no issues for weeks either.

Funny thing is that is seems to be happening only in the evening time. My wife uses it during the day while I am at work and she has had no problems.

What are my options here? If I can fix this that is the best thing, but if not I purchased it at Best Buy WITHOUT a protection plan. Do I need to return it to Best Buy or take it to an Apple Store (An hour and a half away)

    :::: sighs :::

i miss the days when c|net used to cover it live on cable. much better to watch it on TV than in front of a 1st generation broadband connection with dropouts, etc.

He's right you should try to put 512 MB in there if you're running 10.4 to get a little more performance. I think you can go up to 1.25 GB of RAM on that computer.

Just a note... if your fear is of a thread being "derailed", then your ignoring of a particular user may not help as it doesn't mean that others won't see their post and respond to it.

    -Lee

Quite true. I can't imagine how this could get implemented but I think the simplist solution is simply reporting the offending post. If the poster continues to exhibit such behavior, they will most likely be in contact with the mods
