They might as well add a Core 2 Duo Mac Book Pro too.

My gues is that all these whiners would not even notice if you snuck in at night and swapped out ther procesor for a C2D chip. They'd just wake up the next moring fire up the computer and never even notice.

It's like those audiophiles who argue endlessly about if gold plated or silver plated speaker wire sounds better.

Obviously the images are copyrighted by Apple, and those images they don't want people using. Ok, well, that is their rights, they designed them and copyrighted them.

For the benefit of others who don't bother to read the article, the images in question are provided by a system API on OS X. The API is *provided* to give developers images they can use to represent the current computer, and is supposed to be used that way. All RA have done is used those same images to transmit from the desktop to the iPhone, to show the user which computer they're connecting to.

Some idiot reviewer at Apple has seen the images and decided that since they're displayed on an iPhone they're infringing one of the many incredibly vague rules in the SDK. Given the completely borked review process, it's unlikely to be rectified, and has wasted a lot of everyone's time - there's no way to know in advance which rules the reviewer may decide to impose - almost every app could be seen to infringe one of them. Like the iPhone book app rejection and many others for different obscure reasons, this is a case of a sensible rule interpreted in an insane way.

Can't blame the developers at all for walking away from the frustrating, capricious waste of time which is iTunes store approvals, and good on them for publicising this; taking three months to even give a firm reason for rejection is a real failure on Apple's part, and the entire process is a train wreck.

If Apple doesn't defend their copyright, then they can lose it, so they HAVE to fight for it.

I think you're confusing copyright and Trademarks. This is not the case with copyright at all.

I imagine Santa Rosa would be long gone by summer '08.

Why? Is Santa Rosa not due out around spring / summer 2007? I am sure it will still be around a year after it is released.

This device is precisely why I haven't replaced my Airport Express (see sig). I sure hope this turns out to be true because this is exactly what I've been waiting for!

New nano and 23" iMac would be sweet too, although I don't need a new computer so it doesn't really affect me much.

Apple does not care about us, they just enjoy us lining their pockets full of cash. They get us hooked on using their products and we go and buy more and more of them. They just enjoy getting our money, like any business.

Alright. Let's go about it this way, using your own terminology.

How has Apple had success "lining their pockets full of cash."

How has Apple gotten us "hooked on using their products."

Are you suggesting they borrowed Harry Potter's wand and tranced us into purchases, held guns to our heads, or imposed government regulations requiring the purchase of iPod Nanos?

Or - what I believe to be more likely - are you just blathering, "I don't like corporations, and I happen to be on an Apple message board"?

I agree totally lame and bad for Apple.
How longer i think of the "news" today the more foolish i think it is of Steve to even announce this crap!

If Greenpeace want to be taken seriously, they should abide by the rules like everybody else. I like what they've done on their website, and it's probably flattering for Apple to be singled out in this way (any publicity is good publicity) - but I wouldn't be surprised to if they did get rowdy and stupid in the Expo.

It would be good to get some eyewitness accounts (someone's bound to put something up on YouTube, surely!!)

I thought the 5G was already able to handle 640x480 movies, just couldn't display them at full resolution?

The way I understood, it was capable of playin that resolution in mp4, but not when using AVC/H.264...

The only problem with Conroe vs. Merom in an iMac is the heat production. I am sure it is possible to keep an iMac with a Conroe cool enough. What I think is very hard to achieve is to keep it cool and quiet at the same time. I have never, ever _heard_ the iMac in my office, and that is really nice.

Of course it would be possible to put something into the Energy Saver Preferences like a "Keep Quiet" option. If selected, processing power could be cut down when the iMac gets too hot to be cooled down without making much noise. You would still have the potential to get full performance if you choose so.

Hmmm, it's a tough one. But I think the price vs. performance of Conroe being so much better than Merom will mean that Apple will try their best to cram one into the iMac. It would mean a more powerful computer that's cheaper for Apple to produce, and it is a desktop after all.

But you are right that the thermals of Conroe could be a problem. I'm not sure how much of a difference speed-step will make. Although it is the most power-efficient desktop chip out there, it consumes less power under load than Pentium D's at idle:

    http://images.tomshardware.com/2006/07/14/power_conroe.png

And it runs much cooler than the chips in the Macbook and Macbook Pro in normal computer cases:

    http://images.tomshardware.com/2006/07/14/game_over_core_2_duo_knocks_out_athlon_64/conroe_temp_min.gif

    25 degrees celcius with speedstep...

    http://images.tomshardware.com/2006/07/14/game_over_core_2_duo_knocks_out_athlon_64/x6800_temp_max.gif

And 45 degrees at max clockspeed. And that's the 75W Conroe, the 65W one should be slightly cooler. Now I know this isn't in the iMac case, but if the chips run that cool in desktops then hopefully they shouldn't run too much hotter in an iMac...

Come on Apple, show us the HD. In a time when everyone's standoffish about HD because of the format wars Apple adopting the technology would mean you would never have bought into the wrong technology -- and eventually I imagine it would become the standard.

Come on Apple, push the technology forward like you know you should. Please?

Don't cry - a tablet would be the absolute worst interface for edit digital photos, so there's absolutely no chance that'll be happening at photokina.

Hrm... for aperture i'd agree probably, but i'd be interested in trying one out with Capture NX :D

There are so many rumors about a new ipod coming in the next few weeks/months/etc, most likely announced at Paris (maybe).

That would be an awesome birthday present for me, my birthday is the 12th ;-)

Over in the UK not remembering passwords can sometimes land you in prison. Just remove the incriminating files frequently and regularly.

In the US you have the right to not self incriminate...they can make you turn over a physical key to a safe but since a password is not physical and in your head they can't compel you to turn it over....its considered testifying against yourself...a few court cases have faced this issue.

If you'd followed the dSLR world at all over the past two years, you wouldn't ask this question. :) Canon and Nikon are doing well; most everyone else is dropping like flies. Sony is trying to pick up the pieces that were Konica-Minolta's dSLR business, but at best they're going to be a distant third behind the Big Two. Pentax and Olympus are holding on as far as I know, but they are not doing well.

It would be a very poor move for Apple, and I have no doubt they realize this. You might think Apple has a rabid fan base to draw on - go read any "Nikon vs. Canon" thread on any photo discussion board sometime to see REAL rabidity. :D
I can see why they are not doing that well...... A film SLR is a heck of a lot cheaper and they were harder to make. They are charging way too much. Back in the old times we all had film SLR's for the quality, ability to change lens (not that different from todays lenses), etc. Unless you are a pro the prices are way out of most people budget. You spend 700 to 4000 for a body and every lens is 500. Crazy.

I have nothing against Greenpeace or the message that Greenpeace is trying to send about the environment. If Greenpeace's presence (or more specifically, Greenpeace volunteers' presence) at other public events is any representation, I am not surprised at their behavior.

    http://www.macworld.co.uk/mac/news/index.cfm?newsid=16291&pagtype=allchandate

Heck, every trade show I ever go to has girls with their tits half hanging out wondering the halls handing out leaflets nowhere near their particular stand.

Sad to see so many people now happy to have people's free speech stamped all over.

In response to the previous post above, perhaps Greenpeace should think about limiting its volunteers at public events to "really hot" girls dressed "appropriately", I am sure its message would be better received.
