No one cared until the X-Factor show made the theme for last week's songs "The Beatles". Suddenly millions of UK TV viewers cared. The long "Beatles now on iTunes" adverts aired in the breaks just increased the profile.

Plus (i could be wrong) Simon "Money Whore" Cowell has his fingers in Sony who co-own the rights to The Beatles catalogue!?

    Don't quote me on that.

Remember, if you buy Vista, it'll most likely last at least 4-5 years before the next paid upgrade, unlike with OS X where if you want the latest and greatest, you're looking at an upgrade almost every year.

You can easily upgrade OS X from 10.1 straight to 10.5 (atleast 10.4), and if you can't, do a clean install because it's a same damn disk. Can you upgrade Win98 to Vista?

Vista looks to be a big jump from WinXP too, and seems a lot more mac-like.

People said the same thing about XP, but all it did was to take 2000/NT code back then, add few drivers and paint it ugly blue.

wireless capabilities is the way of the future. I don't see ourselves in 10 years still being limited by wired headphones and such. Maybe it'll be easier than the Zune (haven't seen the demo) but the idea of beaming a song for somebody else to download/hear is pretty cool to me.

wireless headphones, sure. That's coming, and soon. But beaming songs to other people? No, I don't think it will ever be a very popular idea. I want to listen to my music, not the guy's next to me. That's why I own what I own and not something else. Besides, if I'm wearing headphones that probably means I'm not with anyone I know, and I'm certainly not going to be sharing music with strangers because it would just be weird.

American foreign policy has indeed come up quite short in the foresight department. However, Khadahphee (or however it gets spelt) rose to power with no real assistance from other countries and has only been supported indirectly, through people buying oil. The only support Libya gets from the US is indirect, from irresponsible excess in oil consumption that keeps the prices up for everyone.

You'd be right except for our military ties to Libya.

Seems we've played a significant role in arming Libya in recent history, though not nearly as much as European nations.

    And $999? Holy...

Wow! That's great value. Although it looks like the edu-iMac (no bluetooth or superdrive or remote). But at least it's available for those without more money to spend.

As for the spread between 24" and MacPro . . . good that they're reducing the gap. Give people more options!

When I just upgraded through iTunes on Mac, after downloading for a second it flashed "Verifying iPhone with Apple".

Has that been there before? Did I miss it in the past?

yes, apple will be shooting themselves in the foot if they don't have that issue resolved in the second generation model.

does anyone know how many hrs it is until we should "expect" the announcement assuming it is going to be released within the next day.

We heard something really similar to that when every other company released video-playing mp3 players before Apple did, and Jobs said he didn't see anybody wanting to have portable video. Well, Apple bit its tongue and released it, calling it "innovation".

Actually, I believe he said portable video was a waste of time becuase there was no content to PLAY on these devices...and back then, there wasn't. Apple released their iPod with video AND the ability to actually use it.

Ain't that the truth! Anyone actually seen someone using one of these yet?

We had a Microsoft Rep on campus last week; he demoed a Zune for us. It didn't look half bad (except for the colour), but its also important to remember that when they have reps demoing them, most everything will work.

Is anyone else having the issue with the double vibrate when you get a text?? I had this issue with 4.3 and I have heard no complaining about it. Everyone I know who has 4.3 has the double vibrate so it's not just my phone, but I haven't heard anyone else say anything. It's pretty annoying. Anyway, I was just wondering if this fixed that issue or not.

It's not a bug. It's supposed to do that so when the phone is in your pocket you can tell you got a text when it's on vibrate, so you won't think it's an email or notification.

No, the way this works is to effectly by-pas all that. All buffer overflow "hacks" do this.

What you do is send a poorly formatted, out of spec network packet. The driver reads the packet which is oversized and places it in memory. The packet being over sized over writes some of the driver code. Some of this over written code is an entry point to the driver. So the next time that entry point is called the hackers code is executed. .

Some of this points out the wisdom of the IBM AS400 design: code and data were separately tagged entities. It was not possible to execute "data," nor was it possible to tag "data" as "code" without OS intervention; even drivers could not do this since the tagging was a hardware function and drivers ran at a different security level. Of course, the machine was exceedingly slow, but it was an interesting hardware/software design decision to tag all contents of memory.

Sorry to disagree. My local Best Buy, Amazon, and B&H Photo (where I buy my camera equiptment and a good place to buy computers with no tax and Apple Care for a great price) are all fully stocked. This could be the stores knowing the product life cycle and trying to reduce inventories by ordering less and less with each restock.

I could easily see them releasing after the stock is truly depleted so no one needs to discount to move out old inventory which is probably more profitable at the moment. But, I don't know and can't see any reason at this point to hold off introducing a new computer in fear of compromising iPad sales.

Anyway, the complete lack of any tangible rumors for a 'this Tuesday' release is keeping my expectations low. I am placing the odds, based on nothing, at 1:4 for this Tuesday and 4:5 for the next four Tuesdays. If not this Tuesday I may instead buy a refurb imac. Apple told me that I could return it within 30 days (of placing the order) without a restock fee if I exchange for a higher priced item. It looks like a refurb imac 3.3 and a MB might cost about the same as a high end 15" MBP. Anyway, the wait goes on.

There's no way Apple will wait until stock is completely depleted at the discount outlets.

I get the sense that the resellers have been waiting for a while too. MacMall, for instance, let their stock of 17" MBPs dwindle and then restocked this past week. They've also been pushing the end date of their MacBook Pro sale back week after week.

I really think there's been some unforeseen delay, but I think chances are good for 3/16 based on what little info is out there.

If you want to see an example of 3D tech done right, go look at the lenticular screen on the Fujifilm W3. Everyone I've shown this camera to has been amazed.

I wouldn't mind if the iPad incorporated a 3D display. The thing is, the 3D industry is so new there's not a lot you can do with it besides take pictures and watch movies.

The tech is also expensive and anything that needs glasses (99% of the viewers out there) is just crappy technology trying to capitalize on early adopters. Lenticular displays, eventually with face tracking, are where the tech will grow towards. And the number of devices with good lenticular displays on the market right now is pitiful
    - Fuji W3
    - Nintendo 3DS
    - Sony Bloggie 3D
    - JVC GS-TD1
    - Toshiba's Glasses Free TV

Usually Apple doesn't jump into markets for the hype so I'd think if they were gonna put a 3D display on an iPad, they'd have some additional plans in the background to make it worth their while.

I didn't read much of this whole thread, but this lady right here makes sense. Then again, I hope this idea of being able to buy a coach if the man buys an ipad works both ways.

Go to Mexico and you can score a coach for $20-30 bucks. It will work as well as a $700 coach you'd get here. You can't say the same for the $50 eyepads. ;)

Also, the way I read this it seems like they're using a version from February at these demos. (Which makes sense that they wouldn't show off the absolute current version. Someone's probably been working on this presentation for awhile.) So what they showed really could be a version that has literally 4 or 5 more months of work going into it.

Don't forget that the feb version was probably an even earlier version to make sure that it all works seamlessly so we could be looking at a version that is early 2011 at the latest.

From all the tidbits of information flowing in I am getting very excited about this update and have already seen many hours that would have been saved if I had had the new version on previous projects I've done this year! It just keeps on getting better!

I'll wager that Apple didn't use Comic Sans  in their reply note.

I always interpreted it as a handwritten note. I guess we won't know unless the guy post a photo of the actual note (if it in fact exists)...

I find it very disturbing that an adult man would have to ask his wife for permission to buy an iPad, much less return one because she said "No."

C'mon. Has nobody ever done something, only to have someone close to them (like a spouse, a sibling, a friend, ...) call them out on it to say "Hey, you know, given your current situation, maybe that wasn't a wise move"? Has nobody ever taken such advice, thought on it, then concluded "You know what, my friend is right"? Or is everyone truly hung up on this attitude of "I'M the only one who knows what's best for me, so stay outta my face"?

Slap a Core 2 Duo in it, bump it up to a 15 or 15.4 inch screen and watch it become Apples best selling notebook ever.

Just an example of a generic office budget ... the City of Toronto has 44 Councillors with an annual office budget of over $50,000 each (most of it used on "useless" crap)

Our new Mayor Rob Ford actually spends $0 every year of his office budget.

lets cut that in half to "reasonable"... all across the country in every city town and county.

Another example is that Mayor in Southern California making over $800,000 per year ... think he is the only one?

We need to weed out this "useless" waste and get back on track ... this kind of Government feeding at the trough is what is bankrupting our countries ... not the Military budgets.

I agree that abuse needs to stop, but the underlined is completely and utterly false. This kind of abuse is so miniscule in scale compared to the hundreds of billions we are talking about here. The term drop in the bucket is beyond inadequate here.

Your entire sense of scale is horribly off mark.

Again, I agree that no public official should EVER make as outrageous a sum as $800,000 (hell $100,000 is pushing it in my book) but to suggest that THAT is bankrupting the country and not the big ticket items (healthcare, Military, benefits), well I don't really have any words to describe this.
