    The headline is wrong.

The rumor is NOT that they would abandon Intel. The claim being made is that they would switch from x86 to ARM.

I'm getting so sick of hearing this excuse. NO ONE holds the phone by the TINY little black glass area next to the screen (right and left in portrait orientation)... the hold it by the metal edge, which has nothing to do with how close the edge of the screen is to the edge of the phone.

    So tired of this.
Really. So, your fingers are so hard that they don't bend slightly over the edge of an object you are holding? You should get that checked out. Maybe try a little lotion.

What are you people doing to scratch your phones so much? I don't use a case with my iPhone 4, carry it in my pocket (sometimes with my car keys) and there's not a noticeable scratch on the front or back.
I agree. I had a 1G Touch for over 3 years and it didn't have a scratch on it from normal use. My daughter once threw it across the driveway, causing gouges and scratches all over the bezel and rear. Nothing on the glass. The iPhone 4 glass is less prone to scratching.

To lay down some feedback of my own, I have used Sophos for a while and I am very pleased with it. I had Clam XAV for the longest time, and to be honest I never felt very safe w/ it because it never had the image of it was even scanning legibly, sometimes it would pop up with scan errors, corrupt updates, etc. The list goes on... Sophos is a prime example of an AV that has characteristics that others are missing. It's stable, fast, reliable and ultimately gives you the best protection because it's always scanning, and always searching the file you open each time. What more can you want?
So, I tip my hat off to Sophos

    Its simple.

    We get:
MBP updates and maybe MB updates
    10.4.8
    Movie Store
6G iPod (not touchscreen) & Nano updates
One More Thing....Media streaming device (Cube re-incarnation) or headless tower (unlikely)

    Thats it.

Too early i think for 10.4.8, replace it with iTunes 7 and i think your set ;)

Still not sure they will distract from the movie stuff with MBP, MB or other hardware updates except the streaming video stuff (as it ties into movies)

Windows is making a version of Windows that works on ARM and the regular processors, so ALL the software works for it. They wont be separate versions.

So do you mean microsoft is implementing universal binaries? as in, intel windows apps will run on the ARM version? This would be a very new thing for windows if that's what you mean. If microsoft was any good at copying, they would have learned that lesson from Apple since the 68k/PowerPC transition. It works every time when going from one architecture to another, or from one word size to another.

So I am planning on buying a MBP a soon or soon after they upgrade to Merom (depending on my $$ situation). BUt, I might be convinced to wait until Leopard is installed on the machines to buy.
    Question:
How much will it cost to upgrade? I know that the current version of OSX is $100+ in the Apple store. Is that an upgrade, or for people still running 9? Will the upgrade be that much?

    Thanks

$129 for everybody if it's like previous releases. There is usually no upgrade.

    Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_2 like Mac OS X; sv-se) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8H7 Safari/6533.18.5)

    3200x2000 sounds great!

Now, just give us the hardware to run at least last year's games at more than mediocre settings.

Isn't it about time they update their .Mac offerings too?

Maybe there's .mac integration with movies...shrug

Either way, it's "been about time for an update" since .mac came out :p

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PEMDAS#Mnemonics

I like this young geeky woman:

There is a new mnemonic featured in Danica McKellar's books Math Doesn't Suck[2] and Kiss My Math[3] that does address this very issue: "Pandas Eat: Mustard on Dumplings, and Apples with Spice." The intention being that Mustard and Dumplings is a "dinner course" and that Apples and Spice is a "dessert course." Then it becomes not a linear string of operations to do one after the other, but rather the "dinner course" operations are considered together and performed left to right, and then addition and subtraction are considered together, again performed again left to right.

-Sync wirelessly (No more messing with that iTunes syncing madness)
    -SD Card (Expandable storage)
-File manager (Operates more like a PC)
-Can actually attach files in the stock E-Mail app (IPad cannot)
-Photo file management in stock photo app (Not possible in iPad without iTunes syncing madness)
    -USB Port (This is HUGE)
    -HDMI (Also pretty huge)
    -Decent cameras
    -Flash
    -UI looks very cool.

Haven`t held a Xoom yet so just working from posted specs..
But I do have an iPad 1. Quite a disappointing experience for a power user.

    The games rock though!!

I did play with the Xoom right after it came out on my of my Best Buy visits (the same one that is not not working that I revisited last night). I personally didn't care for it. Too chaotic on the interface, but I can see where the more technogadget people would like it. But I think the more general consumer will have issues with it as it's just not as clean as iOS on the iPad.

I do think the Android and potentially RIM tablet will catch on. It's foolish to think Apple will be the only major player in the long run. The market is potentially too big. But Apple has a huge advantage right now as it seems Moto, Samsung and others are rushing products to market and not giving the best experience for the masses.

Yeah while talking about Japan's protectionism of their agricultural production really adds to the topic of discussion... cause everyone here who clicks on this thread via the main page wants to hear about Japan's agriculture.

Let's "evolve" the thread to encompass kamikaze pilots, kabuki theatre, zen Buddhism, sushi and whale hunting too...

Well the beauty of this is that you don't make the rules. So if a topic changes and people want to talk about, simply disregard the comments.
    ;)

It wouldn't blow me away for Apple to have an ARM OS X running somewhere in there laps, hell OS X ran on intel from day one.

But any chance of release seems unlikely until ARM locks down a solid preforming CPU. Although is Apple and Microsoft come up with a good was to have x86 and ARM support in one OS, then both chips throughout Apple line might makes sense.

For now, I see Apple being too close(developing Thunderbold, getting chips early) to leave Intel.

Fake. Yet another chipset change would lead to many unnecessary problems.

Like some others have said - Apple, being so wonderfully customer-experience focussed, wouldn't do this is there weren't some tangible benefits that outweighed the downsides.

Yes, this could be a 'fake' rumour, but it's certainly well within the realms of possibility.

As I mentioned above, the biggest hurdle would be x86 emulation. I would suspect ARM are looking at that closely, and would have some kind of on-chip functionality to speed up that process.

    i get 3g data for 12.75 a month, unlimited.

Just with the sprint = cheapest internet.

That deal is through my dad's work. sprint seems very interested in salt lake city, best coverage in slc, entire university of utah is full reception, even underground.

but then again, i did just buy the samsung a-900 a month ago. wow, karma is still kicking my ass. (i've done some bad things in the past :p )

Apple can't not update at least the top-end MacBooks. Dell & Co. will be putting Core 2 in comparably priced machines - $1299/1499 - as the price breaks down similarly to Core Duo chips.

Apple doesn't want switchers going "hmmm, I can get a MacBook for <x> or a Dell with a better newer processor for the same."

With Pandora or just having an iPhone/iPod, I don't see a point streaming music, max 20Gb, what if there is not internet, what if you stop subscribing. Doesn't sound like a breakthrough idea to me.

I reckon Lion will be the last of cat names used for OS X.

They can't really call the next one Ocelot, for example.

Maybe they'll just call the next release Cat? Cat5? Meow? LOLcat?

    Oblig LOLcat:
