For those complaining about costs - ever thought that maybe the whole purpose of negotiation is for the carrier to host and distribute those updates free of charge to end users rather than chewing up customer's monthly traffic allowance?

I wanna know how that will work for the rest of the world carriers....

Sorry, just stating facts. Flash is a horribly inferior technology and has crippled the web from a much greater potential. I honestly have not missed it at all on my iPhone and I block it with ClickToFlash on my Macs. I would GLADLY forgo Flash if Apple can kill it forever. Web developers need to use approved open standards and stop using Flash as a crutch. And if by Apple's own image, you mean far superior open standards that are approved by the W3C, then yes!

Frankly, the vast majority of users, and developers, and content providers, DO NOT care what you personally want, no matter how much you roll your eyes.

Flash is on virtually every computer on Earth, and pretty soon it will be on virtually every smart phone as well. Except the iPhone, of course.

Flash works very well, for the vast majority of users. The fact that Apple has not expended the minimum effort required to get Flash working more efficiently in OS X, is mostly problem for only those relatively few of us, who prefer to use Mac OS.

(In my testing on OS 10.6.1, Safari is by far the worst of all browsers at handling Flash: it pushes the CPU to 77%, while Firefox and Camino stay at less than 49%. Safari is also by far the worst on Windows 7, where on the same video it runs to almost 30% of CPU, while IE8 is at 1%, and Firefox and Chrome are at 4%.

The vast majority of users enjoy what Flash provides.

And, Flash does things which would be impossible, or very hard, or prohibitively expensive, to do with other currently available technologies, and deploy them for all browsers and systems.

So, I repeat: the rest of the world DOES NOT care, that you, and a handful of weird backroom guys, have an irrational hatred of Flash. Move on.

The bottom line is, if Apple doesn't get Flash on the iPhone, it will quickly lose market share to Android. It's a HUGE missing feature, bigger than cut/paste and turn-by turn navigation and mms rolled together, and you can bet it will be advertised as such.

I'm curious. Anybody know where all that money goes? How much does Apple (the computer company) get vs. music companies vs. the two remaining Beatles? I heard that Michael Jackson owned the rights to a lot of Beatles songs - and now he's gone too. Any place this can be looked at?

The iPhones 5 MP camera is better then the competitors 8 MP cameras. If they are on the same quality level with a new 8 MP camera it will be better then the competitors 12 MP camera.

Megapixel numbers are not as important as most people think.

People who are only in love with specs don't want to give the ipad its due.

The device works, because it is optimized for itself, i.e. hardware and software specs are integrated really really well.
It has a great price point and stressing over camera quality is ridiculous, as it is not a camera! Will it be better, yes in the next generation when availability and prices of 8 MP or more fit into what Apple wants to pay for it.

People also don't want to recognize that an ipad is not a laptop. We are IMO about 50% there, but until reliable voice recognition technology replaces a real keyboard, we have to wait.

I always have to laugh when I read about the next ipad killer.

The last ipad killer was actually the ipad2, and that with such a weakly underpowered camera in it.

Don't just blame Adobe...blame apple too. It's a code/OS issue. It's works perfectly on PCs.

Ahh, the armchair programmers are out again. Exactly what is a "code/OS issue"?

Apple is not responsible for Adobes crappy code. The fact that it "works perfectly" on PCs is completely irrelevant. I can write a program that works well on Windows and a program that works crappy on OSX - how is that Apples fault?

Why is Apple blocking Flash? This is one for the FCC! Same reason that Microsoft used to block Netscape. Apple wants websites to use Apple software and not Flash. FAIL! It's a violation of free markets! Here comes a Netscape-Microsoft lawsuit in the Supreme Court, except this time with Flash-Apple.

Actually, Apple wants websites to use open standards such as HTML, which is not Apples software. Flash is proprietary and is certainly not a free market. You should cut down on the caffeine.

I bought one at the BB in Santa Fe, NM on Wednesday.

I live in Albuquerque, and both stores here have had no inventory over the last month. I drove the 40 minutes (75 MPH speed limit) after the Santa Fe store confirmed over the phone they had some 16's & 4 64 WiFi's.

The Magic Trackpad rules. Love it. Don't even use the mouse. It seems like you have to move the mouse so far to get it across the screen and with the Magic Trackpad its just gets you around the screen faster.

You can change the tracking settings to make it faster...

Why the AppStore works the way it does, and why its perfect, and why poeple shouldn't b*tch.

In the jailbreak community, packages can do whatever they please. there open, so to speak. An example of why this is terrible, is in winterboard, the popular cydia package. (ive installed this and tested everything myself, with load tests, memory tests, performance tests, and many other things, on both the 3G and the 3GS)

A: winterboard relies on a package titled mobilesubstrate, and what that does is lets programs be able to inject there own code instead of the deafult one built in from the spring board (example, when you press the home button in winterboard instead of closing the app it restarts springboard.app to let the changes you made take place)

B: what winterboard does and how it does it. winterboard lets you create a folder in a directory it creates in the system folder called "themes". what you do in there, is create directories that are identical (but in a fashion thats easier and a lot of the major directors for theming is built into winterboard) to apples current ones, but at the end the image or .plist or any file you want to replace, had a different image or code or whatever your replacing. and winterboard forces the phone to load that one, instead of the default one, enabling you to make any changes to the system that you want without harming the original code.

C: Why this is bad. seeing as there are no limits or moderators, anyone can replace anything with whatever they please. Apple spent years optimizing this operating system for the hardware to work flawlessly, to the last detail. and most random hackers just dont have that kind of attention to detail. Example: the main image type used on the iPhone interface is .png. although apple, uses a specific variation. they created there own type of png, with the compression information and color spectrums and tags after the image, instead of before it in the code line. this enables the image to be loaded into the integrated video card, which shares the same processor as the main one, to load the image before it decompresses it. this also helps battery, ebcause it saves lots of processor cycles. seeing as the iPhones main harddrive is a flash drive, that is horribly slow. so this makes the drawing of the images considerably faster, because it can decompress it, without either having to work from the drive, or load it into ram, decompress it, and then delete the image from ram after its done. but every single theme, ever, uses regular formatted pngs, with the data before the code. this is no problem on a computer, with fast harddrives, separate video cars, and much bettr hardware, and that don't have to keep the battery times as long as possible running always on as peoples phones, with limited space so its still portable.

and this slows general performance of the phone to where loading of new images are much slower, and drains battery, just the type of compression used in the png. and not to mention every single time you use the touch screen it has to check to see if you have anything installed to inject code, or permit the original. whicth uses many processor cycles, and drains battery because of this.

now thats only images, think of what people would do with plists, fonts, apps, and everything else.

it just makes the phone, well, crap. and the soul reason this phone is so great, is how optimized the operating system is. if they let it run loose like the palm web OS, people would be getting frustrated at how slow there phone always is, and having to monitor closing apps themselves, and so much more.

apple taking control, is the soul reason for how intuitive, easy use, feature full, glicth-less, and non-jerky the iPhone is, which is all the reasons its successful, and why none of its competitors make it in the same field.

To sum it up: because people are stupid and will fu*k it up if there given the access, and then people will b*tch at apple that they made a crappy, laggy, no battery, crashing-all-the-time product. you have to remember: the main bulk of people using this product, dont know how it works. and for the people that do, we still have jailbreaking if we feel the need to change something silly, or just have a peice of mind that we have the power to (haha i changed it so that when i type my pass code wrong it says "suck is b*tch instead of saying tryagain). and thank you gehot/devteam for making a jailbreak with jsut as much attenion detail as apple has, so the jailbreaking process itself dosn't mess things up :)

Well... but at least it's not Apple's fault, because they didn't produce the driver. Therefore it's actually not a concern of Apple's but of the driver's producer's.

On the other hand Apple did include it into it's OS seemingly without testing it thorougly, and that is, of course, a concern of Apple's. So they will have to work together to get rid of that - and I'm sure they will - and I may be smug again. :p

It doesn't really matter if wasn't "Apple's fault." It's their machine that ends up being compromised and so it's their responsibility to take care of the problem. How they do that is up to them...getting Atheros to patch things is the first step, but then they could evenutally switch vendors, move to an in-house solution entirely if they aren't happy with the job Atheros is doing.

It's the end-product with a big honkin' Apple logo on it...it most certainly is their concern.

Now I know what is the product Steve is going to announce!

    An air conditioner!

    The Apple Whoosh

    It has amazing new features:

Compact size. With it's ultra portable size you could transport it were you go, even if it weights the same as your refrigerator. It's that thin. And that heavy, too.

Touchscreen. Because there is nothing worse that an air conditioner remote. Imagine a beautiful touch interface. Pinch once to put it in "comfort" with a smooth nice wind in your head, pinch twice to go "caribean" and holograms of caribean hot girls make the appearance around you. It uses sensors to detect were you are and place the holographic girls right there.

.Mac Syncing. What happens when you go to a conference or a hotel and you want to relax like when you're at home but you don't have your Apple Woosh with you? Well, using .Mac syncing, all your Wooshes will remember your favorite settings. It's that easy. It's just work. Another reason to switch to Mac, even tough will work on Windows too, but the iTunes version will be crippled.

Flash drive. What you say? Nobody wants memory on an air conditioner? Oh, your so wrong. Steve knows we want to see pictures in the roof while the Apple Woosh use a mosaic effect to present the family photos to... well, the family. And all of this magic uses Core Animation and isn't compatible with Tiger, so make sure so upgraded to the latest big cat.

iTunes WIFI Store. Wouldn't it be great if you could purchase music right in the living room while looking at the caribean girls proyected by the Apple Woosh? Of course it would. Just watch the Steve demo at the keynote or wait for the Steve Jobs Clone demo at Apple.com, the same guy that demoed Leopard with the classical look of SJ.

Integrated iSight. Don't you wish you could take photos with your air conditioner? Or make a video chat? The Apple Woosh includes a new iSight camera that will just know when you want to broadcast your life to the world. Just bounce your head three times and the Apple Woosh will kill the lights and open iChat for you, with all your lazy friends waiting for talking to you, because we know you think your so important.

It's the ultimate reality show. You can make feeds and WooshCasts that your dummy friends will easily watch at there iPod or AppleTV. You would not need to know anything about air conditioners, let the Apple Woosh be up there for you, broadcasting your life to iTunes and, of course, making you cool. (Get it? "Cool"? Because it's a air conditioner. It makes you cool. Get it?)

The Apple Woosh will ship in "febiury" at the incredible cost of $499. But wait two months, because by then it will cost just $10.

Something tells me that core animation is going to be iPhoto for multi-touch. It reminds me a lot of the NYU video demo of multi touch interaction experiment photo editing tool. It would not surprise me at all if some feature use this soon.

    my 2 cents.

his is pure speculation so dont read anything into it. I am just making a correlation between the look of the two softwares.

really. that's awesome! If you don't mind me asking how much did the 8GB come out to after the education discount?

It was $20 off. It came to $248 and some change so basically tax gets taken off in NY.
